Carbonite Release 3.7 Features Enhancements Suggested by Carbonite User Base

MELBOURNE and BOSTON - October 15, 2008 - Carbonite Inc., the leading provider of online backup services to consumers and small businesses, today announced a major upgrade to Carbonite Online Backup, Carbonite Release 3.7. The new version is based on feedback from Carbonite’s customers about features they wanted to see and includes enhancements such as an easy-to-use interface that allows customers to search for and restore files by name, file type and date.

“We spent a significant amount of time talking with customers for this upgrade of Carbonite,” said David Friend, founder and CEO of Carbonite. “We’ve always had the goal of Carbonite being the simplest online backup to use and we’ve been lauded for our success in that goal, but we are seeking perfection for the day-to-day experience of using Carbonite. We found that our users had some great feedback that, when implemented in Release 3.7, makes Carbonite even easier to use.”

Carbonite also spent time honing performance for version 3.7. Through a series of improvements to the way Carbonite monitors computer resources, Carbonite will offer better system performance during the initial scan and backup upload.

“The initial upload is the most important process the user goes through,” Friend said. “To make the process simple for the user, Carbonite has always worked in the background with little interference to every day computer usage. With these improvements, Carbonite will continue to use very little of the computer’s memory and bandwidth while improving upload speed.”

Carbonite Release 3.7 features other enhancements to the initial sign-up process. Upon installation, Carbonite will now automatically scan a user’s computer for programs known to conflict with the installation of Carbonite. If any such programs are found, Carbonite will provide step-by-step instructions for how to work around the potential conflict, eliminating the need to contact Customer Support for assistance.

Subscribers to Carbonite will be upgraded over the next several weeks to Release 3.7.

CARBONITE OPENS DATA CENTER IN CHINA

September 25, 2008 - Carbonite, Inc., a leading provider of online backup service to consumers and small businesses, announced today the launch of its new data center in Beijing, China. Carbonite is the first American online backup vendor to offer a local data center in China. The new data center is highly scalable and will eventually handle millions of users.

“China presents a very big opportunity in online backup. But it’s also a market that requires a substantial commitment of resources to be successful. To succeed in this market, we felt it was essential to have a physical presence in China, so we picked Beijing as the site for our first China data center.” said David Friend, co-founder and CEO of Carbonite. “Having a data center in China allows us to be closer to our Chinese partners, and it allows Carbonite to provide far superior backup performance for everyone in the country.”

China and India have been cited for rapid expansion in the area of broadband connections.
“The fastest growth in broadband connections over the next few years will be in the China/India region, which are still adopting DSL at a rapid rate and we expect this trend to continue,” said Claudio Castelli, Senior Analyst for Ovum, in a recent article in Computerworld Singapore.

Carbonite has made a significant commitment to international expansion and now has users in more than 120 countries.

“We recently released a Chinese version of Carbonite and the addition of our data center in Beijing is a strategic foothold in the largest and fastest growing broadband market in the world,” said Keith Cooper, President and COO of Carbonite. “Carbonite is committed to the Chinese market since we are determined to become a global player in the backup industry.”

Carbonite Online Backup Software to be Bundled with Lenovo PCs

Sydney, 15 September 2008 – Carbonite, Inc has announced a partnership with Lenovo, one of the world’s largest makers of personal computers. Carbonite’s award-winning online backup service will soon be available to Lenovo’s consumer PC customers in numerous markets, including Australia and New Zealand, around the world. Beginning in October 2008, a free trial of Carbonite Online Backup™ will be shipped pre-loaded on all of Lenovo IdeaPad and IdeaCentre PCs in key countries and in multiple languages.

“Carbonite has created the top online backup service for the consumer market,” said Feng Lee, Senior Director of Lenovo’s Worldwide Consumer Software Group. “Carbonite created a simple interface that makes it very easy for consumers to back up their valuable data. We knew this ease of use would be a great fit with our consumer customers purchasing Lenovo Idea-branded computers.”

Technology developments in storage capacity and pricing have allowed consumers to have the same protection of off-site backup that businesses have utilized for years. Since its launch in May 2006, Carbonite has backed up more than 4 billion files for consumers and small businesses around the world and has restored more than 250 million files that would have otherwise been lost forever.

The commercial preload agreement includes all models of Lenovo’s IdeaPad and IdeaCentre consumer PCs in the US, Canada, France, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, India and South Africa. Future territories will include Mexico, Brazil and the United Arab Emirates.

“We are proud to be working with a world class partner in Lenovo,” said Bill Cunningham, EVP of Business Development at Carbonite. “We believe that someday every PC will ship with online backup pre-installed. Studies show that users are more likely to switch PC brands if their computer crashes and they lose valuable data. This move by Lenovo demonstrates its commitment to helping users protect their files. With so many people keeping irreplaceable business documents and personal files (such as photos, music, emails, spreadsheets, presentations and correspondence) on their PCs, users need a simple way to keep everything safe.”

Lenovo’s technical integration with Carbonite works in the following manner:
• When pre-installed on Lenovo Idea-branded PCs, Carbonite prompts users to initialize the backup service the first time the new computer is connected to the Internet.
• Once activated by the user with an email address and password, Carbonite runs quietly in the background, continually creating an initial remote backup of all data files.
• After the first backup is complete, Carbonite continually scans the PC for all new and changed files and backs them up whenever the PC is connected to the worldwide web via a broadband connection.
• Storage capacity is unlimited: users never outgrow their Carbonite subscription no matter how much data they need to store.
• Carbonite never interferes with the speed of the users’ PCs or their Internet browsing.
• Data is double-encrypted before leaving the local computer and is transmitted to Carbonite’s secure data center using HTTPS (SSL) for total privacy.
